Astrology!

What is Astrology?

Astrology is a symbolic language and interpretive system that tracks the passage of time and energy created by the positions of celestial bodies (Sun, Moon, planets, stars, comets, etc.) at specific moments to understand personalities, relationships, life events, and spiritual cycles.

Black and Indigenous traditions often blend sky-watching with ancestral earth-based wisdom. Across the globe, people see it as a mirror of the soul and a calendar for collective timing.

Why do people care about Astrology?

The answer is simple: people have always cared! However, Astrology surged again on Black Twitter in 2020 as a reclaiming of ancestral star knowledge that was stolen + suppressed during enslavement & colonization. It has become widely re-popularized by and among black women as a result.

Indigenous activists all over the world use star lore to protect sacred sites and assert sovereignty against colonial erasure.

Astrology offers a framework for articulating emotions and making sense of events that algorithms cannot—especially for my generation, who grapples with climate anxiety, social inequality, and feelings of digital isolation while simultaneously yearning for connection and understanding.

Why is Astrology important?

  • Preserves pre-colonial science, ancient cultures, and traditions
  • Fosters psychological introspection
  • Builds cross-cultural solidarity
  • Used for trauma-healing and mental health
  • Helps people identify their strengths and weaknesses

How do I learn Astrology?

Study it. It’s so much more than just reading your daily horoscope. Start with your own chart, then learn from professional astrologers in person and online through websites, forums, and social media. Do some research on ancient cultures while you’re at it; what you find may surprise you!

It may start making sense why people (especially racist/misogynistic men!) have been taught to dismiss it. (Think “witch trials” and how important reading the stars was for navigating the Underground Railroad— the stars also held our maps, stories, traditions, history, etc.!!)
